October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! Artist Jessica McGhee was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. She went through countless doctor visits, surgeries, and treatments each leaving her with a remnant most people would trash. Instead, Jessica saved all her wristbands, radiation stickers, and paperwork to turn a terrible thing into something she loved. A big whale. This whale was exhibited at the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria in 2022.
Jessica finished her treatments and came out of cancer as a survivor. She is cancer-free and healthier than ever.
"I built the entire exhibit out of garbage and I built it while going through cancer treatment. It was the very best form of therapy that I could have asked for."

Special thanks to the LASS Innovation Grant for funding these inspiring opportunities.

Meet our artist, Jessica McGhee
Jessica is an eco-sustainability artist committed to lowering her footprint by supporting local conservation organizations, engaging in regular clean-ups, and using found plastics in her work. Her online presence as on social media has helped her spread her artwork as well as educate others about the environment. Through resilience and perseverance, McGhee’s artwork depicts being able to make beautiful things and a beautiful life out of “total garbage.” Her transformation of discarded items acts as a metaphor for the challenges she has faced both mentally and physically.
Jessica started her business Hey Lola in 2003 as a small retail boutique, selling gifts and handmade jewelry. Most of her jewelry is made using bio resin, recycled metal, and plastic.
