🧑🏼‍🎨 In this class for teens, you will be taking an unconventional approach to the ancient art form. You will begin by getting familiar with handling the henna cone (which can be quite different from anything you have worked with). You will then move to drawing some common patterns, such as flowers, leaves, vines, and mangoes, but make the patterns on a canvas. Of course, you are welcome to also draw on your hands; this art class will provide all supplies required. Based in Providence, Rhode Island, artist Sheida Soleimani (b. 1990) constructs elaborate and surreal tableaux in her studio. She then photographs these meticulously prepared sets, which incorporate mixed-media backdrops, props, and symbols. Models are central to each scene, but their faces are always hidden, providing an air of anonymity, if not universality, and shifting focus to their gestures. For her “Banner Project,” Soleimani has photographed her parents with their backs to the camera, each raising a single fist. 🔝

Historic New England and Mandorla Music present the first annual David Chesnut Jazz Festival, Jazz is one of the quintessential American art forms and this full-day outdoor festival features a range of jazz styles performed by an eclectic group of musicians from across the greater Boston area.

There are family-friendly outdoor activities throughout the day, including interactive performances by Cornell Coley’s Fascinating Rhythms Drum Circle. The museum is open for self-guided visits. Tickets are $15 and $20. Call 617-994-6600 for more information. 🎼👌🏽
