City of North Charleston Announces Closure of North Charleston Fire Museum

North Charleston, SC — The City of North Charleston today announced the upcoming closure of the North Charleston Fire Museum, following a decision by private collectors to reclaim the historic fire apparatus currently on display.

Much of the museum’s collection was maintained through long-term loan agreements, and the return of these vehicles has made the continued operation of the facility in its current form unsustainable.

In honor of the museum's legacy, admission will be free of charge to the public until the final day of operation on February 14.

Since opening in 2007, the North Charleston Fire Museum has served as an educational resource and a tribute to the history of firefighting, welcoming residents, visitors, students, and fire service professionals from across the region. The City extends its sincere appreciation to the volunteers, firefighters, historians, and community partners who supported the museum throughout its 20-year operation.

How certain are you that your child is the safest they can be while riding in the car? With vehicle crashes being a leading cause of death for children 1 to 12 years old in the United States, it’s very important to make sure your child is in the correct safety seat to accommodate their growing bodies. Car seats can reduce
the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers. Know for sure if your child is in the right car seat!

To help caregivers transport children as safely as possible, the North Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Museum & Educational Center , Safe Kids Charleston Area, MUSC Children’s Health, South Carolina Department of Public Health and South Carolina Department of Public Safety, will be hosting a FREE car seat checkup event on February 13th from 10am to 12pm at North Charleston Fire Museum (4975 Centre Pointe Dr).

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to check car seats for proper installation, and to advise parents and caregivers on how to choose the right car seat and properly install it in the vehicle. In addition, technicians can check expiration dates and recalls of car seats and will demonstrate how to register car seats with manufacturers so parents and caregivers will be notified if there is a recall. Technicians will conduct car seat checks at this event on a first come, first served basis.

To learn more about this event, contact Captain/ Fire Safety Coordinator, Laura Kondor, of North Charleston Fire Department, at (843) 740-2647 or e-mail: [email protected].
