Build your dream cone—with no chance of melting! In this sweet summer craft on Tuesday, kids can stack colorful scoops to create their own custom treat. How many scoops will yours have? What 'flavors' will you choose? Don’t forget the sprinkles… or the cherry on top!

Inspired by the bold, rhythmic work of Alma Thomas, this Studio session is all about color, pattern, and playful precision. Kids will explore painting in repeating patterns—circles, waves, and dashed lines—using a vibrant palette of colors. Along the way, they’ll experiment with what happens when certain hues sit side by side, discovering how colors can pop, soften, or completely change each other. Join us between 10-11am.

Our June artist of the month is Alma Woodsey Thomas. She was a Black American artist who is famous for her bright, colorful paintings filled with patterns of circles, stripes, and dashes.

Alma taught art to children for 35 years before becoming a painter when she was 68 years old! She never gave up on her dream of making beautiful art. Look for projects inspired by her throughout the month.

Dig deep and watch creativity bloom! This weekend, kids will craft tulips that show more than just the petals—they’ll explore the hidden bulb below the soil and see how the whole flower comes together. It’s a hands-on reminder that nature is full of surprises, and sometimes the most amazing things happen out of sight.

It might be a little early for real veggies, but in our Studio, the roots are already sprouting! This Friday, plant a fabric garden and add some homespun flair with buttons—perfect as pebbles, seeds, or minerals. Little fingers can dig, poke, and explore all the textures… and who knows? They might even grow a green thumb!

Curious toddlers = tiny scientists with BIG questions (and zero off-switch). That’s why our Friday STEAM drop-in is such a hit. Because when you’ve got a toddler, curiosity isn’t optional… it’s a full-time job!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Flexible straw, paper, scissors, tape, pencil, small bowl/cup to trace, ping pong ball

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Trace a circle using a small bowl or cup. Cut it out.
2. Mark the center of your circle with your pencil. From one edge, cut a straight line to the center dot (see fig. 1).
3. Cut a small circle where your center dot is, about the width of your straw. Be careful not to make it too big. You can always make the circle bigger, if needed.
4. Bring one cut end of your circle over the other cut side so it forms a cone and tape together.
5. Use tape to connect the straw and your paper cone as shown in the picture above, making sure there is air flow through the straw. What’s the science? Fig. 1 Fig. 2
6. Now you’re ready to test! With your straw bent at a 90-degree angle towards the ceiling, place your ball into your cone, inhale, and blow into the straw. Can your breath float the ball?

What’s the science?:
The floating ball activity is a great example of Bernoulli's principle. It states that as air moves around an object, it creates different pressures on that object. Faster air means less pressure. Slower air means more pressure. We see this with the flight of birds. The key to flight is creating pressure upwards on the bird's wing to keep it in the air. Take this a step further and experiment with pom-poms of different sizes, aluminum foil balls, cotton balls, or tissue-paper ones. Which will work best? What else could you test?
