Flip Carrington was a flightless bird whose owner paraded him around at formal gatherings. He had a unique ability to absorb all the “chroma” in a room and store it in his beak. A room decorated with bright colors and elegantly dressed people would become dull and monochromatic.  When his owner signaled his fancy bird a certain hand gesture, Flip would release the color back into the room in a festive light show, usually with great fanfare and applause.

I have been asked, “how many windowsills is Scott Prior going to paint?”
My response is always the same, “did anyone ask Monet how many haystacks he’s going to paint, or Warhol how many Marilyn’s he’s going to make?” (there are about 30 Monet haystack paintings, and 50 Marilyns). Then I explain that artists frequently return to familiar subjects so they can revisit favored themes and learn something new every time. A windowsill with glass objects in full afternoon sunlight looks very different than in the morning, or at sunset when everything is tinted gold.
People often see in a Prior painting a humble Tupperware cup glowing with light, or a honey bear filled with golden honey and say “I had those when I was young”, or see a landscape and are certain they have been in that exact location. In showing so much of his own life, Prior’s paintings make us think of ourselves and our own lives. The art that resonates the most connects us to each other.

William Baczek Fine Arts’ exhibitions move fluidly between abstraction and realism, reflecting a broad view of what contemporary painting and sculpture can be. Rather than focusing on a single style or movement, the program emphasizes artists whose work demonstrates exceptional skill, thoughtful composition, and a deep engagement with their materials. The result is a dynamic dialogue—where gestural abstraction can sit alongside meticulous representational work, and where diverse approaches reveal a shared dedication to the craft of creating excellent art. What unites the gallery’s program is not a stylistic agenda but a commitment to highly executed, well-crafted art.
About her paintings Jaq Chartier says: I love collecting intriguing images from chromatography and DNA gel electrophoresis, as well as things seen under the microscope and under the sea. Science keeps me inspired by the wondrous. And like a scientist I call my paintings tests because I’m following real questions and running real experiments. I set the stage for materials to interact and reveal hidden chemistries, and the final paintings are the results. I use a stripped-down aesthetic with lush color to suggest an unseen world—beautiful but also bizarre, inflamed, suggestive of energies beneath the surface. Instead of paint, I use my own custom formulas of deeply saturated inks, stains and dyes. Such colors can do things paint can’t do – bleed, shift, and migrate through other layers of paint, or change color, or even completely disappear.
William Baczek Fine Arts’ 30 Anniversary Exhibition is open for viewing through June 6, 2026.
Shown: Jaq Chartier, Royal Blue, A vs B, acrylic, inks, dyes, stains, spray paint on wood panel, 8 x 10”, 20.3 x 25.4 cm.

“Almost all of the realism landscapes are at night or dusk. I love that time of day. It is mysterious and secretive. It can change an ordinary object that is shrouded in darkness into something beautiful and undefinable, as heavy snow will do in winter. Sometimes when driving, you get a brief glimpse, a momentary glance at a place and it allows your imagination to fill in the blanks of an unfinished story and create a whole new narrative that is only known to you. The radiance of a window imbues these paintings with an undeniable and irresistible sense of life. Who are these people and what are their stories?

So, I ask myself: What am I doing and why am I doing it? For a number of years, I did just pure landscapes—a celebration of our American landscape. But eventually it was not enough. I needed to evolve. I needed to paint a more personal experience and I wanted the canvas to say something about who I am and the world I inhabit. I needed to paint my life and my search with the hope that this would reveal a deeper meaning to me.”

Tony Soprano said “ ‘Remember when’ is the lowest form of conversation.” And respectfully, not to contradict Tony Soprano, but when you have a room full of people that you’ve known for 30, 40, 50 years there are going to be a lot of sentences that start with “remember when”.
Some scenes from the opening reception for our 30th Anniversary Exhibition. Without good art, a gallery is only white walls and lighting. I have great respect and gratitude for all the artists I’ve worked with. It’s a tough business. You genuinely have to love what you do.
