Today, Norway celebrates the signing of its constitution at Eidsvoll Manor. On May 17, 1814, Norway declared itself an independent kingdom, marking a defining moment in the nation’s history and identity. Wishing everyone a joyful celebration of Norwegian heritage and independence!

Today marks the anniversary of Norway’s liberation from German occupation at the end of World War II on May 8, 1945. After five years of occupation, Norwegians across the country celebrated the return of freedom and sovereignty.

These photographs and film come from the Campbell Norsgaard Collection, recently digitized as part of our WWII Digitization Project. Norsgaard documented the experiences of Norwegians during the war and in exile, preserving visual records of a generation shaped by conflict and resistance.

Call for Abstracts: Rolvaag Reconsidered

Submission Period: April 22-May 31, 2026

In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the publication of O.E. Rolvaag’s Giants in the Earth, the Norwegian American Historical Association seeks contributions to an edited volume reconsidering Rolvaag and his life’s works to be published in 2027.

Articles in the volume can address this topic from a variety of analytical and disciplinary perspectives, and may have a biographical, literary, and/or historical focus. Topics that extend our understanding of the Norwegian-American experience through analyzing Rolvaag and his writings in the context of new historical eras, new geographical areas, cross-cultural encounters, and/or innovative applications of theoretical models are particularly encouraged.

Statement by the NAHA Board of Directors:

The Norwegian American Historical Association (NAHA) was founded by immigrants and their descendants more than a century ago to care for the stories of Norwegian America. We are committed to understanding migration movements of the past and connecting them to immigrant experiences today.

The NAHA Board opposes the ways the current federal government is abusing its authority by using immigration enforcement as an excuse to intimidate and terrorize communities, ignoring due process and constitutional rights.
