Our Summer Lecture Series begins on Tuesday, June 2 at 6pm!

Nancy Steenburg has taught at UConn for over 30 years, and she has been on the Venture trail for 20 years, first searching for the documentation of Venture’s extraordinary life, and then digging deeper into the impact of enslavement in colonial Connecticut. In the 21st century, we look into why Black Lives matter. Venture’s story is the story of why one extraordinary man mattered both in the 1700s and now.

Announcing Exhibit of the Month! Each month, a Slater Memorial Museum staff member will choose a different object (or objects!) from the archives to showcase. May's exhibit was curated by Amanda Flynn Rumney, our Education & Outreach Coordinator.

In the 19th century spirit of Decoration Day (more commonly referred to as Memorial Day today), we honor those who served in the Civil War. Stop by the museum shop now through the end of May to see the display which highlights Black soldiers from Maryland and Norwich hero Lt. Col. Henry Peale.

Today we celebrate all mothers, including three generations of mothers in the Crocker family.

Harriet Elizabeth Dillaby Crocker (1826-1913) was the wife of famed Norwich artist John Denison Crocker. One of several portraits he completed of his family, here Harriet is seated with their daughter, the younger Harriet Elizabeth Crocker (1850-1909). Harriet, Sr. and John Denison had at least eight children in total. Little Harriet Elizabeth would marry Alvan Bussey in 1873 and raise two sons of her own.

Slater Memorial Museum is also home to many early photographs of Crocker relations, including this tintype of Nancy Lamphere Crocker (1787-1862), mother of the painter.

This year marks the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776. In celebration of this nationwide anniversary, Slater Museum will be launching three exhibitions in 2026, beginning with "Norwich Stories of the American Revolution," opening May 9, 2026!

Norwich, Connecticut was a center of Revolutionary activity in Eastern Connecticut. From bands of Sons of Liberty to dedicated soldiers of all backgrounds, the city produced scores of men and women who served in all capacities. From humble militiamen to a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, come and learn the lesser-known stories of these valiant Patriots as well as the story of America’s most infamous traitor, Benedict Arnold. Among a few original 18th-century artifacts on display will be an original copy of Connecticut’s first newspaper, the Connecticut Gazette, printed the day after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, July 5, 1776.

Opening May 9, 2026 - Exhibition will run through 2027

Slater Memorial Museum is a proud partner with the America's 250th, Norwich, Connecticut Committee.
