Black History Month 2026:
Laila Edwards speaks about being first Black woman on U.S. women's Olympic hockey team. Meet Laila Edwards: The first Black woman to play for Team USA’s Winter Olympic ice hockey team
The 21-year-old hockey player has also broken barriers as the youngest American to win Most Valuable Player. even with her accomplishments, sometimes she worries that her “identity might overshadow everything else.”

“Will others see the sacrifices and dedication that got me here?” she wrote. “Will they understand the discipline demanded to attend 5am practices or the courage required to leave my loved ones to pursue my passion?”

At a young age, Edwards has already broken barriers. She was just 19-years-old when she became the first Black woman to join the US women’s hockey team. She went on to win the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Women’s World Championship that same season. At 20, she became the youngest American to win the Most Valuable Player award at the women’s hockey world championships.

Speaking on her unique identity in the sport, she wrote in an essay for Wisconsin’s “Forging Firsts” series about how she always tried to “blend in” but “always stood out” as a girl in the sport playing with boys, and later on as the only Black woman on her team….., By NHARI DJAN JAN 4, 2026

Thank you to Ms. Ida Goodrich for sharing this:
A post from ten years ago came up in my memories today! I imagine some of our new residents don't know that Oak Hill had a depot with two train stops a day, 29 and 30 some years ago! In the summer time, we met the trains and watched the post master put up the mail! In the meantime we watched the station agent, Mr. Bash send telegrams by telegraphy, which was a way of communications, since hardly anyone had a phone or could afford one. I have no idea why the depot burned down! There was no fire station then! The third picture is priceless to me! It was given to me by one of the NASA lawyers who for some reason collected pictures of Volusia County, taken from a postcard! The first building is the old Goodrich store and next door was the Axon and Annie Cleopatra's home! My father-in-law, Clarence Goodrich said his mother went out in the woods and hand picked and marked each tree from which the shingles on the house came! The depot agent's house was across the road to the south of the Goodrich's store! Great memories for me!
