Happy Birthday Edith Heath! 🎈What does it mean to design for everyday life? For Edith Heath, the answer was simple and radical: create objects that are as enduring as they are beautiful. Through earthy glazes, innovative clay forms, and objects made for daily use, she redefined ceramics—bringing art, industry, and California living to the same table. Her work reflects a belief that good design belongs to everyone.

We’re honored to celebrate her legacy through a recent gift from the Brian and Edith Heath Foundation of more than 100 objects and an endowment to care for the works of craft and decorative arts in OMCA's collection—strengthening how these stories are shared for generations to come.

See Heath’s work in our galleries.

Our resident pronghorn antelope are back! After meticulous conservation and repair work we just finished in the lava tube diorama, these iconic taxidermy specimens have returned to the Gallery of California Natural Sciences—just in time to welcome visitors up close once again. 🦌

Fun fact: Pronghorn antelope are the fastest land animals in North America, reaching speeds of up to 60 mph—and unlike cheetahs, they can sustain that pace over long distances. They’re also among the continent’s greatest travelers, with some herds migrating over 150 miles between seasonal habitats.

Shoutout to our preparators and conservators for the care and expertise it takes to preserve and re-install a specimen like this!

Walk through “Good Fire: Tending Native Lands” with Saumitra (AKA Oakland bio)! Listen as he explains how Wildfires in California didn’t get worse because fire exists, they got worse because Indigenous cultural burning was suppressed.🔥🌱

For thousands of years, Indigenous communities used cultural burning — “good fire” — to care for the land, prevent catastrophic wildfires, and sustain ecosystems across California. This exhibition challenges the idea that fire is only destructive, showing how Native stewardship has shaped these landscapes for generations.

📍2 WEEKS LEFT to experience “Good Fire” at OMCA through May 31, 2026.
