Survey stakes appeared at various places around the government complex this week. There three were a little NW of the museum. It turns out they are locations for new trees. Here's hoping they are more pecan trees.

Sadly Marion County lost another historic building on the 16th. Fifty-four-year-old St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church was declared a loss after an electrical fire. The church’s congregation dates back to 1892.

I attended the funeral of a co-worker there years ago. The pastor preached the most powerful and uplighting message I have ever heard at a funeral.

As if the loss of the church was not painful enough, the congregation then suffered vandalism to their property.

The photos are the front of the 1970’s building, views of the night of the fire and the damage, and an older sanctuary of the church. I could not find a good picture of the building before the fire and had to take a screen shot from Google Maps.

As always Celeste Godwin Viale delivered a great program yesterday. Her talks always have the listeners thinking "I didn't know that" with the amount of detail she brings to a subject. A man's remembrance of seeing the newly completed first sanctuary of the church when he was nine years old was fascinating - he had heard about glass windows but had never seen one.

Every time she speaks I think to myself that she should write about book. Well, she is!!!
