I have always felt that visual art should stand or fall on its own merits. What a particular piece inspires in a viewer is every bit as important as the impetus for creating the work, maybe more so. It is especially rewarding when another person has a deeply felt connection with a rendering such as a portrait of a loved one or favorite pet. I thrive on variety and new challenges so it is natural t
hat I work in a number of mediums; primarily acrylic, pastel/charcoal, watercolor and the very occasional oil. My work has a fair amount of detail so I work with a lot of photographs, usually incorporating two or more to create a balanced composition; I take full advantage of artistic license. All drawing and painting is freehand, in other words I don't employ devices, direct transfer or grids to layout and render the piece. The only exception might be a very large piece that I would project my freehand drawing. I think it important that people see the process so I typically work on a piece (usually a commission) at the art shows and markets that I attend. I hope that by demystifying the process, others will be inspired to pick up a pencil or brush and create their own masterpiece. After all, why should I have all the fun!
