Fashion meets function. 🪡

While not particularly common, sacques—which fit like loose jackets—were paired with petticoats and allowed for a wider range of motion than the typical 1860s dress. This made them a practical option for working-class women.

An impromptu bullwhacker lesson 🐂🐂

Bullwhackers drove teams of oxen pulling heavy wagons filled with goods along the Santa Fe Trail. They used a combination of vocal commands, “gee” for right and “haw” for left, and whip cracks to guide the oxen. The whip was cracked next to the oxen and was never used to physically strike them.

Shoutout to Dr. Bob for repairing the fretsaw! Dr. Bob was able to get the saw back into working condition and even hand-forged a replacement for a missing piece. We’re lucky to have such talented volunteers!

Fretsaws are designed for making intricate cuts and detailed curved shapes in thin wood. Because the blade is very fine, a fretsaw can create tight turns and delicate patterns that would be difficult to achieve with larger saws.

🎓 Congrats to all the new Olathe graduates!

As we celebrate the Class of 2026, we’re also proud to recognize a couple of Mahaffie graduates whose paths began right here in Olathe and went on to leave a lasting impact:

Ella M. Mahaffie — Class of 1885, Stone School
Dedicated her career to education as a teacher and administrator, and was appointed to the Kansas State Board of Education in 1913.

Ada Mahaffie — Class of 1931, John P. St. John Memorial High School
Served as a longtime aide to Governor Frank Carlson and Senator Bob Dole. Ada played a key role in preserving the Mahaffie House and was instrumental in securing its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
