We have some news!

Our lovely social media manager Olive is off on new adventures!

After being a part of our core group for the past two years they will be moving back to the Bay Area and joining the Vallejo Maritime and Naval Museum! They will be acting as their Conservator and Assistant Curator. Vallejo is Olives hometown, and they are beyond elated to bring their skills back to their community.

Olive has been part of our curatorial team, and was the sole curator of our recent fiber show Sauma Saman. You may spot one of their fiber pieces up in future west wing displays!

They also want to urge everyone to check out the color of indigo this weekend, as we will be open for our usual hours this weekend from Friday to Sunday.

We will miss you greatly Olive, make sure to come back and visit!

TCMoFA is proud to announce the color of indigo, the newest exhibition by harrison hannon

Join us on May 15th from 6pm-9pm as we open this show in the museum’s east wing, as well as present the return of the museum’s permanent collection in the west wing.

Regular open hours will resume Saturday May 16th
Fridays 2-7pm,
Saturdays+Sundays 12pm-4pm

Artist and Curator harrison hannon illustrates their complicated and evolving personal experiences as an individual within the mixed diaspora through an array of mixed media works in the color of indigo.

He manipulates the form of installation art to express these personal understandings while utilizing the color indigo as a thematic lens. The exhibition is an opportunity to explore and deepen understandings of the mixed diaspora.

This exhibition features photographs of harrison and their family by bill purcell and david hoekje, autobiographical sculptural pieces by hannon, as well as paintings by hannon and velva kelly.

“In the moonlight black boys look blue but in the moonlight, am I blue?” referencing the film Moonlight, hannon interrogates their own identity as a descendent of enslaved Africans and Irish immigrants.
“Am I allowed to reach for the deep vulnerable emotional state that is posed in
this quote? I am positive I am not the only mixed person that feels this way and questions the color of the world and the vessel they live in. How does perception shape someone, and why do I give so much space to my own whiteness when whiteness is a term that feels meaningless to me?” -hannon

Thank you all so much for supporting TCMoFA. We will see you soon.

CHRYSALIS

“Chrysalis” is a community-driven exploration of the beauty of metamorphosis in a brutal world

The Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts (TCMoFA) is proud to announce the opening of its 4th annual Spring group art show, “Chrysalis,” on March 13th.

This free to enter public art exhibit invites visitors to explore themes of change and metamorphosis through the works of 21 talented Washington-based contemporary artists.

As all things transit from one state to another, it can be helpful to throw up a shield, to mask ourselves or our charges in the face of danger, much like how insects protect themselves with a golden sheath during metamorphosis. The chrysalid stage represents a moment of respite and transition, private and contemplative, and ultimately metamorphic. “Chrysalis” peels back the layers of protection we wrap around ourselves as the time for emergence has inevitably come.

Featuring works from:

Anton Seder
Asenath Lizárraga
Camille Trautman
Chad Yenney
Devin River
Fennel Overstreet
James Kidd
Jerzy Repsch
Kelly Watson
KEMC
M Freeman
Marissa Magic
Molly Wheat Baker
