Kim Saltiel is a Washington-based painter whose work centers on the power of light, atmosphere, and setting. Working in pastel and oil, she creates contemporary impressionist landscapes that reflect the shifting moods of the Pacific Northwest, a place where fog settles into evergreens, water mirrors the sky, and fleeting light transforms the familiar into something extraordinary.

Using close observation, Saltiel often paints en plein air, returning to the studio to further develop compositions through layered color and nuanced value. Her process balances structure with openness, allowing forms to emerge and dissolve in response to light and movement. Edges soften, marks remain expressive, and each painting reflects a sense of transition.

Rather than documenting a scene exactly as it appears, her work focuses on the experience of being there. Subtle shifts in tone and atmosphere carry the weight of the composition; the hush before rainfall, the glow after a storm, and the steady presence of land and water all find their way into her work.

Her landscapes reflect a deep connection to the region, offering a contemporary interpretation of its enduring beauty. Through restraint, sensitivity, and an intuitive approach to light, Saltiel creates paintings that hold space for stillness, reflection, and the subtle drama of the natural world.

Come experience Kim’s thoughtful artwork, displayed now at The Carpenter’s House.

We’re building out a full calendar of workshops at The Carpenter’s House, and we’re looking for instructors of all kinds to help bring it to life. Painting, photography, woodworking, sculpture, floristry… or something totally unexpected. If you’ve got a skill or a perspective to share, there’s room for it here.

This is a chance to:
• Teach what you love, on your terms
• Build your own curriculum (or workshop something new with us)
• Host one-off classes, recurring sessions, or full series
• Connect with a creative, engaged community
• Grow your audience and your practice
• Earn income doing what you already care about

If you’ve been thinking about teaching, this is your sign to step into it. Join us at our Instructor Open House to learn more, see the space, and start the conversation.

There’s a playful kind of storytelling happening in Leah Van Horn Hazen’s work, and always more to find in the details.

Working as JPE Finery, Leah creates textile pieces that carry memory in their threads. Silk ribbon embroidery, delicate stitching, vintage trims; each element is chosen with heart, layered with care, and stitched into something both personal and timeless.

Her work pulls from nature—flora, fauna... the small details most of us miss—and pairs it with a deep love for the old world: lace, buttons, and fragments of the past, reworked into something entirely new. There’s a sense that these pieces have lived many lives before finding their way here.

Come experience Leah’s work in the gallery, and spend some time with the hidden details. They have a way of revealing themselves to you when the time is right.
