And

rew Jackson Poppleton was the second mayor of the City of Omaha. Poppleton, an influential businessman and successful attorney, was General Counsel for Union Pacific Railroad. Poppleton Street in Omaha is named in his honor. Thus, the Poppleton Block in Downtown Omaha is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Landmark Heritage Preservation Ordinance of Omaha. What put him in the history books was his landmark case of 1879, the trial of Standing Bear v. the United States Government, held at Fort Omaha while Standing Bear was in custody. At the time, Native Americans were not considered human beings, had no legal right, and this was many years after Lincoln had freed the slaves. As the trial drew to a close, the Judge announced that Chief Standing Bear would be allowed to make a speech on his own behalf. Raising his right hand, Standing Bear proceeded to speak. Among his words were, "That hand is not the color of yours, but if i prick it, the blood will flow and I shall feel pain. The blood is the same color as yours. God made me and I am a man." Judge Elmer Dundy ruled on behalf of Standing Bear, justice and equality. Judge Elmer Dundy wrote: "Webster's defines a person under the law as a living 'human being,' a man, a woman, or a child an individual of the human race; thus it would seem to include even an Indian." Standing Bear, without raising a gun or shooting an arrow, defeated the United States government in its own court of law and set a new standard for equality for Native Americans, whose land it was in the first place.

Our Story

Galleria Circo is owned by Dennis Circo, an art lover and Omaha native. Mr. Circo finds most of the art displayed by traveling the United States. We currently show work by Pete Tillack- an Australian Painter located in San Diego, and Charles Fazzino- a 3d pop-up artists from New York. Located inside the historic Poppleton Landmark Building, our gallery aims to show fine art from all over the United States, including art from right here in Nebraska.

Since May 2019, Galleria Circo aims to show Omaha natives and visitors fine art that is not typically shown in small galleries. We not only search for art outside of Omaha, but try to also bring in talented local artist who work with all sorts of mediums and styles. There is a little something for everyone.

Galleria Circo is an active participant in the Old Market Gallery Walks held every First Friday. First Friday openings each month feature a new local artist’s work accompanied by drinks and hors d’oeuvres. These events are kid friendly, free, and open to the public.
