We're serving up a sweet connection between Broadway and botanical art! 🥧🎨

With Waitress coming to the Lutcher Theater, we're taking inspiration from one of Jenna's creative recipes, Mermaid Marshmallow Pie!

While today's marshmallows are made with sugar, corn syrup and gelatin, they were originally made using sap from the marshmallow plant. Elizabeth Blackwell illustrated this plant in her 18th-century botanical book, “A Curious Herbal,” which documented plants and their medicinal uses. The book, which is part of the Stark Museum of Art's collection, features hundreds of detailed botanical illustrations.

Did you miss Curator Sarah Boehme’s America 250 slide talk at the Stark Museum of Art? Now you can watch it online! 🖥️

🇺🇸 In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the Museum’s special focus exhibition, “America 250: Three Presidents – Lincoln, Grant, and Garfield,” highlights three watercolor paintings by artist Oscar E. Berninghaus on the Museum Lobby’s Highlight Wall. The paintings depict moments from the early lives of Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and James Garfield.

This special focus exhibition provided an opportunity to highlight unique works from the Museum’s collection while deepening our understanding of their histories. Through a commitment to curiosity and scholarship, our team conducted significant research that uncovered new information about these paintings, helping us preserve their history and share their stories for generations to come. 🖼️

In her slide talk, “America 250: Lecture Log Cabin to White House,” Sarah explores these discoveries, the stories behind the paintings and how the early experiences of these future presidents helped shape their lives.

This special focus exhibition is on view through December 23.

Experience art in a whole new light! 💡🎨

The Lobby in the Stark Museum of Art features a colorful light display with 100 color-changing bulbs, each capable of producing more than 16 million colors. Together, they bring the Lobby to life with color and motion.

Each month, the display draws inspiration from a different artwork in the Museum’s collection, using colors and patterns to reflect the mood and ideas of the piece. 🖼️

Visit the Museum and enjoy this unique art-inspired experience! Light shows begin every hour on the half-hour from 9:30AM-4:30PM on Wednesday through Saturday and last approximately five minutes each.

🎨 College artists, there’s still time to submit your work!

🗓️ Submissions are due in one week on October 18 and are open to all students currently enrolled in a college or university located in Orange County, TX, Jefferson County, TX, or Calcasieu Parish, LA.

Held November 6 – December 19, the exhibition will feature original works of art from college and university students in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. 🖼️
