Thank You to Everyone Who Joined Us for Our Inaugural Mennello Sunset Glow🌅 ☀️

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the first Mennello Sunset Glow: Experience the Art. Your participation helped launch this new event designed to highlight art, community, and creative exploration at the museum.

Nearly 100 guests enjoyed an evening featuring a curated soundtrack by DJ Nigel, an immersive light environment throughout the galleries, and the Our Orlando exhibition with works by Tasanee Durrett, Martha Jo Mahoney, and Mado Smith.

The experience was complemented by specialty cocktails from Proper Orlando*, a modern and intimate cocktail lounge known for its craft drinks and curated vinyl soundtrack. Light bites from Arthur’s Catering rounded out the night, creating a multisensory celebration of creativity and connection.

We are grateful to our presenting sponsor, VyStar Credit Union, and to our sponsors Proper Orlando and Orange Appeal. Thank you for helping us introduce this fresh program to Orlando’s arts community. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future. Beginning this month, we will be highlighting each of the artists found in our current exhibition entitled Our Orlando: Tasanee Durrett, Martha Jo Mahoney, and Mado Smith! Now on display at the Mennello Museum until August 16th.

Meet Tasanee Durrett (pictured in the middle).

Born 1994 in Chicago, Illinois she received her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona before pivoting to art as a way to connect with her heritage and bring understanding between others. Durrett's background in architecture is apparent through most of her works on display at the Mennello, as it balances line and form, head and neck, and land and sea. Each surface incorporates material (salt, raffia, and silkworm cocoons) meant to mimic the flora and fauna of the natural world. Although autobiographical, her work expresses themes of longing and belonging that extend beyond her individual story and sense of self.

Drawing from her Afro- Indigenous heritage, she pushes pattern and line reminiscent of Adinkra symbols from the Akan peoples of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Symbols that read as perseverance, power, confidence, resistance, and beauty. This imbues confidence and commentary together into a work that celebrates her own identity as a Black American. In the artwork shown, THE SEED THAT FLOURISHED, all of these elements come together to show a head adored with large, lush crown of overlapping line, color, and texture.

Tasanee Durrett has provided us with interactive versions of her artwork in order to physically experience the many textures of her works through innovative sensory bags. On your next visit to the Mennello Museum, make sure to ask for one of these sensory bags!

Tasanee Durrett will be our guest artist for Free Family Funday on June 14th.

NOW ON VIEW: OUR ORLANDO: TASANEE DURRETT, MARTHA JO MAHONEY, AND MADO SMITH! 🍃

The fourth iteration of Our Orlando features local artists Tasanee Durrett, Martha Jo Mahoney, and Mado Smith. Durrett explores the intersection of ethnobotany, history, identity, and psychology within the Black Diaspora through continuous line portraiture. Mahoney evokes emotive memories of landscapes and the natural world through poetic arrangements by painting abstracted, ephemeral elements that come into being, evolve, and transform in dynamic color. Mado Smith focuses on studies of the human figure in harmony with nature. From mural work to small, intimate paintings, he creates new, striking, and positive juxtapositions where both the human figure and its environment are honored, illuminated, and slightly exaggerated for emphasis. Our Orlando works to support and provide platforms for local artists, advancing excellence in creative practices.

See the exhibition for yourself from May 15th to August 16th, 2026.

Mennello Museum of American Art and its exhibitions are generously supported by the City of Orlando and Friends of the Mennello Museum of American Art. Orange County Government provides additional funding through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program and United Arts of Central Florida.

FINAL WEEKEND!

This is the last call to check out our three Spring exhibitions: Jesse J. Aaron: Sprit in the Wood; Faith and Vision: Spirituality in Self-Taught Art; John D. Gerdes: Sacred Algorithm. These exhibitions will conclude on May 3rd, 2026.

THE EXHIBITIONS:
Jesse J. Aaron: Spirit in the Wood explores the artist's intent to release, through carving, the spiritual forces he believed were inherent in the trees of his Florida environment, forming captivating yet recognizable animals and human shapes. Guided by the natural beauty of Florida hardwoods, such as cedar and cypress, Aaron described his journey into art as a spiritual calling that compelled him to carve wood, responding to its shapes and grain. Celebrating the skill, imagination, and impulse behind Aaron's prolific work, the sculptures gathered here seem to bring to life character, personality, and most importantly, protective qualities.
John D. Gerdes: Sacred Algorithm: John D. Gerdes' Kaleidoscope series explores perfect perspectives and pure geometries, in which the kaleidoscope's creative vision produces symmetrical, mirrored, and reflective shapes and patterns. These evoke highly symbolic traditions like Buddhist or Hindu Mandalas or Celtic knots, encouraging viewers to contemplate their connections with technology, art, and spirituality.
Faith and Vision: Spirituality in Self-Taught Art: From intuitive messages to peaceful kingdoms, the artists featured in this exhibition created otherworldly visions inspired by their faiths, cultural practices, deep southern heritages, and social and geographic environments. Among the renowned artists from the American South are Gail Campbell, William Edmondson, Minnie Evans, Howard Finster, Regine Gilbert, Alyne Harris, Bessie Harvey, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Nellie Mae Rowe, Ellis Ruley, Mose Tolliver, and Purvis Young.
Jesse J. Aaron: Spirit in the Wood; Faith and Vision: Spirituality in Self-Taught Art; and John D. Gerdes: Sacred Algorithm are organized by the Mennello Museum of American Art.
