Jessica Caldas - New Tapestries

My work is driven by personal experiences and their connections to contemporary and historical issues. The complexities and intricacies of labor, care, and identity in our current and past culture are consistent undercurrents in all aspects of the work, which include layered, labor-intensive drawings, collage, sculpture, performance, etc., and often transform into fully realized mixed media works and immersive installations. I seek to make challenging experiences accessible to those without the same somatic knowledge while still engaging in conversation and confrontation. The viewer is met with bodily experiences that mirror the complexities of my stories, focusing on shared knowledge, awareness, empathy, and change.

Jessica Caldas (b. 1986, Jacksonville, FL) is a Puerto Rican American artist based in Florida and Georgia. Her work connects personal and community narratives, usually centered on the experiences of women and women-identifying folks, to larger themes and social issues through bodily, multidisciplinary works.

Brittney Reid was born in Miami and now resides in Orlando, Florida. She acquired a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Central Florida in Spring 2023, right after acquiring her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2019 at the same university. She visually explores her relationship with death after the breast cancer diagnosis, and recovery, of her mother during her childhood. Interested in exploring the symbolism of material, her artwork evolves and develops with the introduction of something new that sparks her interest. Her multimedia practice includes printmaking, painting, drawing, ceremonial animal burials, sculptures, photography, projections, and audio recordings.

During her time as a graduate, she received the Provost Fellowship award and the Pabst Steinmetz grant to fulfill a Healing Arts Specialist position at Orlando Health. Still, at this position, she brings creative projects to cancer patients during bedside and workshop settings. Her commitment in using art as a tool gifts her the opportunity to help patients reconnect with themselves and anticipate moments of joy while navigating the uncertainties of their diagnosis.

“Ceremonies give me a mixture of emotions. Sometimes they excite me, as it’s an opportunity for me to see an animal as more than just pavement barbeque. I see them as a being that lost the game of survival. A world mixed with hunger and old wisdom I could only dream of possessing. Other times I’m left distressed, mad even, with how violent and disrespected its life ended. In a way, I am trying to make sense of it while also letting go of the frustration that I will never know how it arrived at such an unfortunate predicament.”

Silks at Noon
After my mother was diagnosed with cancer and successfully recovered, I grappled with an overwhelming fear of the fragility of life, particularly hers. To cope with grief and anxiety surrounding death, I chose to immerse myself in discomfort by wrapping deceased animals in silk and presenting them with ceremonial offerings like sage and flowers.

The shared love my mother and I had for animals and their well-being inspired me to focus on dead animals as a subject. I use roadkill and similar instances to explore the idea that positivity can arise from profound sadness. This practice not only serves to alleviate my suffering but also aims to address the pain experienced by both loved ones and strangers.

Scott Free & The Contaminator

Disgusted by a comment where a Goddess was explained to be curves and ass by a male artist, The Contaminator decided she wanted to visually open the lid on the "Dirty Goddess" which is inspired by the words of Clarissa Pinkola Estés's "Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype".

Scott Free and The Contaminator
Ever since L.A.-based artists Scott Free (b. 1963 )(Photography, styling, creative direction) and The Contaminator (b. 1988) (Performance, writing fine arts, costuming) created their “art band” in 2022, the two have been combining their multi-talents to create immersive performative photography that has shown in venues,(Co-Axel Arts, L.A.) galleries( The Holy Art: Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, S**t Art Club) and print (Artwalk Magazine, Seline Magazine, Style Cruze) locally and internationally chasing The Goddesses' true form by capturing it in as many channeled chaotic interpretations as it is called upon them
