This Day in History
March 10, 1876

On this day in 1876, the first discernible speech was transmitted over a freshly-patented telephone system. The message from the inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, was a summons to his assistant, Thomas A. Watson: "Mr. Watson, come here; I want you." This marked the first successful test of Bell's invention, which had been granted a patent three days earlier.

This Day in History
February 21, 1885

On this day in 1885, the Washington Monument was dedicated in Washington, D.C. Construction of the monument, built with a granite core quarried in Maine, began in 1848. Building was suspended for 23 years for various reasons, including the Civil War.

The Washington Monument was not the only 19th-century construction project that utilized granite from Maine. The Brooklyn Bridge, the Yorktown (Virginia) Monument, the Chicago Board of Trade Building, and the Hibernia Bank Building in San Francisco all include pieces of Maine granite.

Happening soon at the Page Farm and Home Museum! Join us Saturday, February 28, at 10:30 - 12:30 for Creating Habitat with Native Plants, presented by Ivonne Vazquez of Bas Rouge Farm & Forge!

Native plants are important in attracting pollinators, of all types to your garden. But what do you do once you have these wonderful life forms visiting your plants and looking to make a permanent home in your growing areas? By incorporating native plants which provide food, nesting and overwintering shelter you create habitat. Learn about the many ways in which native plants can become central to the long-term biodiversity needs in your garden. A hands-on activity of sowing native plant seeds will follow the presentation. Open to all skill levels.

Ivonne Vazquez is the owner/grower of Bas Rouge Farm & Forge a Native Plant Nursery in Orono, Maine. She is a former Master Gardener Volunteer, Licensed Registered Maine Guide/Recreation, photographer, garden writer, speaker, workshop presenter and teaches Basic Gardening at Bangor Adult Education. Ivonne holds certificates in Sustainable Landscape & Garden Management, Permaculture Design and is a Certified Green Infrastructure Practitioner. To learn more visit basrougefarm.com
