Huge respect to Zamirr Gaines of the Oroville Boxing Club for his outstanding performance today at the Battle Dome matches in Sacramento. Zamirr displayed the skill, grit, and championship heart that truly reflects the spirit of the Oroville community.

Though he came up short in a razor close decision, our pride in him never wavered. We stood behind him every second.

A big shout‑out to Coach Duane “Tiger” Jones for the dedication, time, and energy he invested to prepare Zamirr to compete at a high level. We’re grateful that both Zamirr and his opponent finished the night safely after a hard fought battle.

It was also great to see the collaboration in Zamirr’s corner, with Coach Paul Clisham of the Paradise Boxing Club stepping in to support Coach Duane. That kind of unity is what builds community and champions! We also thank everyone who showed up from Paradise, Oroville and Sacramento in support of Zamirr!

We’re excited for Zamirr’s next fight and confident he’ll bring home the victory. Oroville, let’s continue to rally behind this young man and his warrior spirit. He’s a true talent. Enjoy the short video and photos to follow.

Flight Officer Samuel L. Broadnax (1925–2009) grew up in South Oroville, California, where he excelled in football, track, and boxing at Oroville High School between 1941 and 1944. In 1944, he joined the pioneering Tuskegee Airmen, training as a P‑51 pilot at Tuskegee Army Air Base and becoming part of one of the most significant chapters in U.S. military aviation history.

After World War II, Broadnax built a multifaceted career in broadcasting and journalism. He later served as technical director for the film Hart’s War and led Oakland’s Summer Flight Academy for at‑risk youth, helping introduce young people to aviation and aerospace careers.

In 2007, he stood in the U.S. Capitol as President George W. Bush awarded the Tuskegee Airmen the Congressional Gold Medal, recognizing their service and legacy. Broadnax also authored Blue Skies, Black Wings, a history of African American aviation pioneers and the racial barriers they confronted.

Remembered for his humility, mentorship, and lifelong dedication to youth, Broadnax passed away in 2009 at the age of 84.

Today was a powerful example of what happens when a community unites with purpose. Community members and partner organizations came together to present new boxing equipment to the Oroville Boxing Club. We extend our sincere appreciation to Cultivate Power Fighting Arts and community partners Sean Allen and Kevin Jenkins for their generous contributions to make this all happen!

We also want to recognize coaches Darrell Thompson and Jennifer Mutch of Cultivate Power Fighting Arts along with coach Duane “Tiger” Jones of the Oroville Boxing Club for collaborating with South Oroville African American Historical Society to explore youth initiatives that expand access to combat sports such as boxing and MMA.

Combat sports offer far more than a structured outlet for energy or self‑defense training. These programs help young people build physical wellness, mental resilience, confidence, and lifelong skills. We are grateful for this partnership and excited for the opportunities ahead.
