This colorized photo, shared by OHS member Cynthia Arnold, illustrates Orwigsburg’s long history of patriotism & respect for those who served our country, bravely.

The photo, circa early 1920’s, shows Schuylkill County’s very first courthouse (now M&T & Community Parking).

Do You Remember?
Every small town had at least one movie theater, one pool hall, one skating rink, several bars, an American Legion, a VFW, and a BOWLING ALLEY...in Orwigsburg??? You bet! The very same building that now houses Valenti's on West Market Street was once a bowling alley.
Here is a brief timeline of Orwigsburg's bowling alley:
~ Opened in 1945 and operated for fifteen years by A.V. Heiser, as "Heiser's Bowing Alleys," it was resurfaced in August of 1952. Previous to opening the bowling alley in Orwigsburg, Heiser owned a Dodge-Plymouth automobile business. Heiser began selling Hupmobiles in 1918.
~ February, 1955, "Heiser's Bowling Alleys" was sold to Curtis Eby of New Ringgold
~ In June of 1955, Eby's "Orwigsburg Bowling Alleys" added a soda fountain, selling Sealtest Ice Cream, submarine sandwiches, and fountain drinks.
~ In 1962, Robert E. & Ruth Rarick became the proud owners of "Rarick's Bowling Lanes" and operated the business until about 1968.
Thank you to Rick Nagle, Schuylkill Haven, for kindly donating this photo. 🎱
