Local History Alert!

A look back at the beginnings of Seymour Lake Township Park. This photo from 1981 shows the early days of the park after the property was acquired around 1976. Before becoming a community park, the land was home to the former George Waite dairy and potato farm, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. It’s amazing to see how this piece of Oxford Township history was transformed into a place generations have enjoyed.

In May of 1981, construction was well underway on the new Oxford High School. The building opened in the spring of 1982 and replaced the previous high school on Pontiac Street, which had served students since the 1950s.

The school was considered very modern for the early 1980s and even included innovative energy-saving features such as earth-sheltered construction and passive solar design. The architecture was so notable that the project received an award from the Engineering Society of Detroit after completion. Today, it serves our community as Oxford Middle School.
