The term “still life” is derived from the Dutch word stilleven, which gained prominence during the 16th century. While it was during this time that the still life gained recognition as a genre, its roots date back to ancient times, to the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. The French term for it, nature morte, covered a range of still lifes subjects, from religious to household inanimate, beautiful objects. This faculty exhibition is mostly comprised of the latter, but also work featuring imaginative compositional elements.
