John Quincy Adams was born on this date, July 11th, 1767. He was the son of John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States, and his wife, Abigail. John Quincy followed his illustrious father in many ways by serving his newly formed country. He served as a Congressman, Senator, Secretary of State, Ambassador, Diplomat, and eventually as the 6th President of the United States.
Historians agree that Adams was one of the greatest diplomats and secretaries of state in American history; they typically rank him as an average president, as he had an ambitious agenda but could not get it passed by Congress. By contrast, historians also view Adams in a more positive light during his post-presidency because of his vehement stance against slavery, as well as his fight for the rights of women and Native Americans. He was very critical of Southern Leaders that supported slavery and whom he believed controlled the Democratic Party.
It was Adams who urged the United States to take a lead in the development of the arts and sciences through the establishment of a national university, the financing of scientific expeditions, and the er****on of an observatory.
He wrote, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.”
