Anne Bellas Viars, art quilter from Nantes, France is in residence at A.I.R. Studio Paducah June 6 - July 4 2025.

Her quilts created for the most part from linens inherited from her great grandmother are hand-dyed, pieced, and stitched. Her designs, primarily abstract explorations in various realms: include her visual diaries and features of the natural world. She refers to her quilts as “open windows” which Bellas hopes will induce a sense of well-being in viewers. An evocative palette (therapeutic colors) are used to achieve this effect.

Music, in this case compositions by J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations are the inspiration for the series she brings to work on at A.I.R. Larger in scale than earlier works, necessarily small due to her tiny Nantes workspace will be easily accommodated at A.I.R. The space factor, the proximity of the National Quilt Museum and the slew of art quilter friends in this country promise a productive stay in Paducah for the artist.

. . ."In some way, I can picture myself here. The Lowertown arts district feels real with a genuineness between people that even a stranger can sense at the ever-popular neighborhood cafe, open seven days, just like the library. Adjacent to the cafe is a labyrinth. Nobody seems to notice me walking there regularly; not the children in the nearby playground; not the espresso drinkers on the back deck; not the dog walkers on the sidewalk; not even the dogs or those cats that roam freely. The last labyrinth I walked was tucked away behind massive Cathedral walls out of view from the streets of Norwich. Not so in Paducah. Something as extraordinary as a labyrinth in the public square says alot about a place." Excerpt from Call Yourself Home

PRESS RELEASE:Charlene Marie Laure Vincent, is in residence at A.I.R. Studio Paducah through October 2024, to begin wrapping up “Call Yourself Home” (working title) her third book in a three part series of spiritual memoirs. All three works--the manuscript in progress and two published works: “Return from Exile,” and “Chances Are” tell the stories of historical figures, but narrated, as Marie Laure wrote, “...within the context, of my own experiences.” In essence her work reveals and explores “...common denominators found among women, faith and timeless connections that shape and give meaning to our lives. “ I attempt to connect the dots by telling the stories of others alongside mine.”

Groundwork for “Call Yourself Home,” included a group pilgrimage, led by the writer to the anchorage of Julian of Norwich. Julian, a medieval mystic. Julian’s revelations and writings during her secluded life as an anchoress in the midst of the Bubonic Plague have served as a source of inspiration for Marie Laure and many others in and outside the theological world.

Among Marie Laure’s academic achievements and studies, the writer counts a Master of Sacred Theology, Boston University School of Theology, Massachusetts; a Master of Theological Studies, Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Harvard Divinity School Center for World Religions: an ethnographic study and Harvard Kennedy School of Government: Organizing people, power and place. In addition to writing Marie Laure has for two decades, facilitated small writing groups to write spiritual memoirs and led other retreats and pilgrimages. Marie Laure lives in St. Augustine, Florida. Contact: [email protected] to learn more about the Serendipity Series and the writer.

Join us in welcoming Michael in the comments!
