The Cool Water Historic Foundation, Inc. Dedicated to the Preservation and Restoration of America's Vanishing Architecture. Our first project, The Carter-Simmons House, is in Duplin County, NC.

Built in the Northeast Cape Fear River area of Eastern North Carolina, the Solomon Carter House is an early plains house located in Albertson, Duplin County, North Carolina. The house was built on land purchased in 1768 by Solomon Carter (1725-1809), who fought in the Revolutionary War in the North Carolina Militia. It is still being researched, but the house was either built by Solomon in 1768/9

or possibly by his son, Alexander Carter, circa 1799/1800, who built a house for his first wife, Sara Whitfield Herring, nearby to his parents with whom they lived after their marriage in 1795. The Carter family sold it in about 1845. It changed hands twice before being acquired in 1850 by Amos Simmons whose descendants lived there until 1965 and it has remained uninhabited ever since. The historic value of the house lends itself to archaeological studies and historical research. There was blacksmith and workshop building on the east side of the house. Trees that grew around that building now form an outline of its shape. And at some point in the late 1800s or early 1900s they attached a kitchen to the east side of the house; that structure is now gone. The Carter House was originally two and a half stories with upstairs and downstairs porches that faced the expansive farmland to the south. It had an attic room with a window on the west side and there is still a firebox in the floor on the east side of the house, formerly a fireplace connection to the chimney. However, the roof was lowered in 1853 by one of the subsequent owner's, Amos Simmons. The house has never had any plumbing, there was an outhouse; and it had only rudimentary electrical connects to the house.
