Congratulations to Francisco Maso for being the winner of the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art 2026! 👏👏👏

Francisco Masó (b. Havana, Cuba, 1988) presents
‘The Coronation of the Gladiolus’ (2026), a site specific Installation of paintings, folding screen, flags, paper chains, acoustic panels, sound, and musical instruments.

“… the artist has created an immersive environment inspired by Cuban public demonstrations. Initially, the installation appears celebratory, even carnivalesque, with bright, bold colors. Purple walls painted in an intense “Quixotic plum” hue, warm midday lighting, an immersive musical score, and staging evoke a festival or public ceremony. However, beneath this theatrical surface, a more sinister reality emerges: repression has entered the scene. Overhead, striped flags and paper chains hang like banners and latent reminders of oppression, while the artist’s paintings-reminders of covert officers -punctuate the scene.”

The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art 2026 is curated by Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon , The Dr. James Cottrell and Mr. Joseph Lovett Chief Curator, and Katherine Page , Associate Curator, Orlando Museum of Art.

The 2026 Florida Prize award juror was Jade Powers, The Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, AL.
