Ninety years ago today, Saturday September 5th 1936, was Rodeo Day at the Matanuska Valley Fair in Palmer. The town hadn’t fallen off the turnip truck yesterday, but it was in fact our first rodeo.

“Denali Majestic” is the other painting I entered into the Alaska State Fair. It did not receive a ribbon, but I’m very proud of it. Both this and “Lost In Lupine” are a departure from the more photorealistic style of many of my works.

This painting was featured at the Palmer Museum of History & Art in July, and at Sevigny Studio Alaskan Art this past March First Friday.

If you get a chance, check both of them out at the Fair.

Check out our last Artist of the Week for 2026! Art By Mattias

Mattias Ahlvin, originally from Scandinavia, has called Alaska home since 2001. He currently resides in Palmer with his family. With a lifelong passion for art, Mattias has explored various media over the years, but in recent years he has focused on the expressive possibilities of watercolor and gouache in particular.

Mattias draws his inspiration from the majestic landscapes of Alaska, focusing on scenes from around the state, but south-central Alaska in particular.
His art is an exploration of Alaska's landscapes, capturing its beauty through vibrant colors and intricate details. From frozen, wintery farms to the towering peaks of the Chugach range, his paintings invite viewers to experience the essence of Alaska through its diverse landscapes.

Mattias' paintings has most recently received awards at the Alaska State Fair Art Exhibit of 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
