Arriving in Palmyra in 1868, William Phelps opened a general store on Market Street. His son, Julius, took over the store in the early 1900s and closed the business in July 1940. Many of the original products still remain on the shelves today. Tours of the store and upstairs Phelps family residence are offered Tues-Fri from 10am-4pm and Saturdays 10-2. Come join us for a tour!

Wi******er, Shoecraft & Riggs, Gurnee once kept a bookstore on the corner of Main and Market Streets in the early 1800s. This wooden building, and others, were swept away by a fire in 1876. All of the buildings were rebuilt with brick. Please note this is not a Palmyra picture and is only meant to show what the store may have looked like.

M. Ritter came to Palmyra in the 1830s and built a combined store and house on Market Street. He managed an old-time general store. Calvin Everson bought the property in the 1870s, and he kept a cigar store in one section. His brother, Gilbert, operated a saloon in the other part. Pictured is the Everson headstone in the Palmyra Cemetery.
