In the early days of Palmyra, there were the Democratic and Federal schools. Ira Selby taught at the Democratic School, while Mr. Blackman taught at the Federal School. The Democratic School was located on the corner of Mill and East Main Streets, and the Federal School was located on Creek Road. A $20 tax was levied for repairs and to supply fuel.

Eventually, Palmyra was split into three school districts (more on this in tomorrow's post, so stay tuned!). This is a 1930 photo of the old District 3 school, which was located on the east side of Throop Street.

Check out this photo and menu from the Hotel Sellen, which was a hotel in Palmyra on the corner of Holmes and East Main Street. Before becoming known as the Hotel Sellen in the 1930s, the building changed names several times, including as the Eagle Hotel and Throop's Hotel. Unfortunately, the building succumbed to fire on December 31, 1986.

Palmyra's local banking business began with Wayne County Bank of Palmyra, organized in 1830. The bank operated on Main Street until terminating operations in 1840.

Pliny Sexton established the Palmyra Bank in 1844. George W. Cuyler then opened the Cuyler Bank inside the Wayne County Bank's old offices. Both banks were later combined, briefly becoming Cuyler's Bank of Palmyra. Mr. Cuyler served as president, with Mr. Sexton as vice president. Eventually, this became the First National Bank of Palmyra in 1864.
