Park City High School 2026 seniors graduate next Friday, but the class of 1926 (100 years ago) graduated on this day in Park City history!
Here is a diploma from Ruth Paxton, and 1926 commencement memorabilia from Ruth and her brother Clarence. The siblings are pictured as children here as well, ca. 1909.

Earlier today, we held our annual Memorial Day service at the Glenwood Cemetery. Thirty-four locals, staff, Board members, and Elks came and listened to Barb Martz gave a brief history of the Glenwood Cemetery and Glenn Wright speaking on the sacrifices of servicemembers. He talked about those in the cemetery and those who fought with him, after him, or before him. He asked everyone to call out names of people who served and sacrificed for their country. After the names were called out, our volunteer bagpiper played Taps as everyone exited the ceremony.
A peaceful Memorial Day to the fallen.

Did you know that May is National Historic Preservation Month?
That means we take the time to celebrate our efforts to preserve historic places around the country!
In Park City, we have many places that have been or are currently being saved, preserved, and interpreted - including mine sites (see other recent posts), historic homes and businesses (we'll put up our annual ribbons in early June when the weather is a bit more consistent), and cemeteries or other miscellaneous places.
Pictured here is some work happening at our historic Glenwood Cemetery in May 1994, with Hal McVey holding the wheelbarrow. Work on the cemetery continues to today - keep an eye out this summer as we do some more work to keep the cemetery preserved, clean, and accessible!

Should we bring back a vintage car show to Park City?

Come hear stories of preserving Park City’s iconic Silver King Coalition mine headframe building in a free talk on Wednesday, May 13, at 5 p.m. in the Jim Santy auditorium at Park City Library, presented by the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.

Local expert, career geologist, and Silver King preservation project manager Brian Buck will share the challenges and successes, and plenty of photos from before, during, and after the 4-year restoration process of the 100-year old building..

The newly restored building was awarded the 2026 Cindy Matsumoto Award for Historic Preservation by Park City’s Historic Preservation Board and the 2026 Community Stewardship Award for Rehabilitation and Restoration from Preservation Utah.

This 12,400-square-foot industrial landmark had been vacant since 1953 and was listed among Preservation Utah's 2024 Most Endangered Sites for risk of structural failure. Completed in October 2025, the project stabilized the 1,325-foot-deep mine shaft, removed more than 1,639 broken windows, and rebuilt the snow-damaged roof using the original corrugated metal panels with their historic patina.

The building is now the centerpiece of the Silver King Coalition Mine National Historic District, designated in December 2024. The building will anchor the Park City Historic Mine Route, launching in September 2026.

The Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History is an all-volunteer committee of the Park City Historical Society & Museum.
