Dive into the collection: the Salomon 9000 EXP Skis.

Salomon burst onto the ski market in 1990 with its new “cap” ski, the Monocoque. The traditional separate top sheet and sidewalls were replaced with one molded cap that streamlined the ski’s look. Skiing magazine’s ski testers rated the Salomon 9000 EXP second in the all-terrain category in the November 1992 issue. By 1993, Salomon's Monocoque monopoly eroded as shaped skis soon dominated the ski market.

In the early 1970s, Burns set out to design and make his own skis, capable of handling the dynamic way in which he cruised down the slopes. He named his creation simply “The Ski.” No brand name. No personal fame. Just good skis.

His apparel line, based in Park City, was developed in collaboration with fashion designer Demetre. Thanks to a recent donation from Bernie Weichsel, the museum now has a sweater from “The Ski” collection, complementing the four pairs of skis and one sticker already in our collection.

Two Little Cottonwood legends, Elbert Despain (left) and Fred Speyer relax at Alta.

Elbert Despain was the mailman who brought mail up Little Cottonwood Canyon from 1922 to 1984 - eventually becoming the oldest mail carrier in the United States.
Fred Speyer was the very first general manager of Alta Ski Lifts Company.

A skilled knitter, Lois Engen handmade this beautiful sweater for her husband, Sverre Engen. We are thrilled to add this timeless piece, made with love, to our collection - thank you to Aland and Barbara Engen for the recent donation!

Lois and Sverre Engen met in Anaconda, Montana when Sverre crash-landed during a ski jumping competition. Seeing his distress, Lois picked up his skis and hoisted them over her shoulder as they walked back to town together. Sverre wrote in his autobiography, “That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship that has lasted all of these years and is still going strong.”
