What is it Wednesday!

This type of basket is called an egg basket. It was used to gather or carry eggs. The eggs would settle into the depressions on either side of the basket and not roll around and break while carrying them.

As the days are getting colder, the sheep's' main diet of grass is losing its nutrients. That means it's time to start feeding them hay for the winter.

Next week we will be bringing in the sheep's' winter food! It's always a sign that cold weather is coming!

Mythbusting Monday!

Myth - The round k**b on a staircase newel post was called a mortgage button and indicated that the mortgage on the house had been paid off. It would have been put in place when the paid off mortgage was inserted into the post.

If only this myth was true. It makes a good story, but there is no evidence of it being true despite people trying to verify its authenticity for years. There have never been any mortgages found in newel posts nor has there ever been anything written about a person doing this. In addition, newel posts sport "mortgage buttons" from homes dating to the 17th century, before banks were established in this country.

Due to the lack of documentation on this one, we are going to have to say it's busted!

Did you know that doing the laundry in the 19th century required most of the week?
Clothes would be sorted, stains treated and repairs made on Saturday. The clothing would then be set to soak until Monday. Early Monday morning washing would begin and continue most of the day as tubs and kettles were dumped, refilled and water heated. On Tuesday, any clothing requiring starch would be starched and hung to dry. Wednesday would be devoted to ironing, folding and putting the clothing away. Just to have it all begin again in a few days!

As the temperature drops, we would like to remind our visitors that Hunter's Home is not heated. Our fireplaces are capped and the house does not have a central heating system. If you plan to visit on a chilly day, we recommend bringing a coat as the interior of the house can become quite cool at times.

If it's two months away from The Night Before Christmas - Live, then it's also two months away from the Fort Gibson Candlelight Tours!

Tickets go on sale October 27th for the December 12th event. Be sure to check out the Fort Gibson Historic Site page or the Oklahoma Historical Society website for more information and how to get tickets!

Today marks two months until the Night Before Christmas - Live!

It's time to start a new holiday tradition this year! We would love to see you December 11th as we reenact the poem Twas The Night Before Christmas using Hunter's Home as the stage. Actors inside the house bring the poem to life while the rooms provide the stage. As the poem progresses, the audience walks from room to room. The evening finishes in the kitchen where 1850s Christmas treats are laid out for sampling and everyone goes home with a little present to remember the evening.

We hope you can join us December 11th for our second annual Night Before Christmas - Live! Reservations are required. You can make reservations by calling 918-456-2751. Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children (6-18). Since the house will be dimly lit by candles during the event, individuals with visual impairments may experience difficulty navigating. Flashlights, including those on a phone are not permitted. Also, please be aware there will be walking and going up and down stairs during the event.
