Selena Gomez said it in August 2023 while promoting "Single Soon" on SiriusXM Hits 1 LA, after the hosts brought up her lyric calling herself "a little high maintenance, but worth a try."

Asked what her standards actually were, she kept the bar refreshingly low: "You gotta be cool, man. Not cool in the sense that people think you're cool. You just gotta be nice and like, please make me laugh and also just be good to my family and people around you."

No private island. No matching Lamborghinis. Just be kind, be funny, and treat the people she loves well.

She also went somewhere most of the coverage skipped: "I just want to be happy with who I am so that whenever that person comes into my life, I can just have them add on to me instead of being this insecure person that I normally used to be." Wanting a partner is normal. Needing one to regulate your self-worth is a different job entirely.

There's a timeline twist too. "Single Soon" was produced by Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat, and Blanco went on to marry Gomez in September 2025. The man attached to the soundtrack of her single era apparently passed the standards audit and got promoted from producer to husband.

Standards are about the treatment and behavior you'll accept. "High maintenance" is what people reach for when the effort expected feels excessive, and excessive is wildly subjective. One person hears "communicate consistently" and thinks basic care. Another acts like they were handed a second job.
