In Other News...The Alexander Preparatory Academy made their 2nd annual trip to the Muth Museum! During their visit, students engaged with newspaper articles from the 1940s to gain a better understanding on the role that sports journalism played in the eventual Integration of Major League Baseball.

Happy Jackie Robinson Day! On April 15, 1947 Jackie Robinson made his MLB debut, breaking baseball’s color barrier and becoming the first African-American player to join the league. Branch Rickey - president, general manager, and a part-owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers - had sent scouts to scour the Negro Leagues for talent before landing on Jackie Robinson to break the unwritten Gentleman’s Agreement that banned black players in professional baseball leagues. Robinson had joined the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League for the 1945 season after his discharge from the Army. In October of 1945, it was announced that Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Montreal Royals of the International League, a minor-league team in the Dodgers organization. He joined the National League with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was the first black player to win a batting title, the first to win the Most Valuable Player award, and the first to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. ✨⚾
