The dual focus of this museum site highlights two very distinct—and compelling—aspects of Louisiana’s rich history. The Wedell-Williams Aviation Collection highlights the legacy of Louisiana aviation pioneers Jimmie Wedell and Harry P. Williams, who formed an air service together in 1928 in Patterson. Both men became nationally prominent during the Golden Age of Aviation. Although both Wedell and

Williams perished in plane crashes, their legacy lives on in the memorabilia and planes on display in this collection. State-of-the-art displays include numerous aircraft, such as the famous Miss Patterson #44 and the Gilmore #121. Also on display are Wedell-Williams’ 1930s air racing trophies and memorabilia. Felterman Theater features an exciting air racing film that visually transports you to the heart of the 1932 Cleveland National Air Races. The Cypress Sawmill Collection documents the history of the cypress lumber industry in Louisiana. Lumbering became the state’s first significant manufacturing industry. As a result, cypress lumber harvested and milled in Louisiana was shipped in mass quantities throughout the U.S. Patterson was once home to the largest cypress sawmill in the world, owned by Frank B. In 1997, the Louisiana State Legislature designated Patterson as the cypress capital of Louisiana. The exhibit features a variety of artifacts, photographs and film that tell the story of this important regional industry. The museum also hosts changing exhibits that highlight other aspects of Louisiana’s culture and history.

Don't let the rainy weekend get in the way of kicking off the summer! Stop by the Wedell-Williams Aviation & Cypress Sawmill Museum this Saturday to participate in our paper airplane contest!

We've had a few questions about rules, so here's how things are going to work:

- Participants will be given a Contestant Form to fill out with a parent/guardian and a single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
- Using only the sheet of paper, participants will make their paper airplane. Colored pencils and crayons will be provided for those who would like to add color to their creation.
- Participants will give the completed Contestant form to a museum staff member and will take their place at the starting line. Each participant will have three chances to throw their paper airplane from behind the starting line (if your plane crashes and gets bent, you can unbend it, but you cannot make an additional airplane for competition). Museum staff will measure the distance the plane traveled and record it at the bottom of the Contestant Form.
- The museum will hang on to the Contestant Form and record all attempts made by all participants. Winners will be determined by the longest distance traveled by the paper airplane after sliding. In the event of a tie, the second longest distances will be compared, then the least distances. In the event that all distances match, the tied participants' names will be put into an online spinner and spun.
- Around 2pm, after all participants have completed their attempts, winners will be announced to those at the museum, then posted to Facebook, and then winners will be contacted individually with the information provided on the Contestant Form.
- Winners are welcome to pick up their prizes at the end of the day on May 23 (before we close at 4pm) or the following week during our normal business hours (Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 AM - 4 PM).

Happy flying!

Come see us tomorrow to learn about Louisiana Women in WWII!

✈️ From Home to the Sky: Louisiana Women Aviators in WWII

Join us at the Wedell-Williams Aviation & Cypress Sawmill Museum for a free history talk exploring the stories of Louisiana women who stepped beyond the traditional roles of their time to serve before and during World War II. According to the museum, these women became members of the Civil Air Patrol and the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP), where they worked on and flew aircraft from small planes to bombers and trained male pilots headed to war.

The program will also examine the barriers they faced, including discrimination, sabotage of their planes, and lack of recognition for their service. The presentation will be given by Gail Garcia, an award-winning journalist and public relations coordinator.
