Painting update... finally back at it. Goal is really to buckle down more and try to paint every day but hey i have to make money to... gotta be able to eat.... I ran into trouble with the boats in the back. The blow up from picture to painting is not detailed enough for the more realistic look that I'm aiming for so I went on line and looked for similar boats to help me detail the back boats more effectively. I'm going to start with the farthest boat and move to the foreground. Before I complete the lead boat I'll finish the dock area since it is behind the lead boat. Research is part of my process.... I want to really know my painting. The boat riding and masts are layed out I just have to paint them in. I may use an acrylic pen to get the lines since some are so fine and super straight. The end result is thw point....

Starting another painting! Yay! I LOVE painting oceans and water... This photo is brought us by a work associate of mine, Martin, who took this amazing photo in Savanah. Now since this isn't a "publish" picture and Martin gave me permission to use it I don't have to worry about copywrite. So yay! If you want to learn alittle about the "process" look at each picture and I'll give you the run down on how I'm going to start this one 🙂

It's all about the layers. In this i painted darkest to lightest then went back and deepened my black lines and whitest areas. When I'm working on a face. I go inside, farthest away to the closest surface twords me. Inside of eyes, nose or mouth 1st. Then ears and lips, eye sockets to forehead and then go around the face and blend in the whole face tones... also inside eye and inside the moth are usually a slightly different color from the rest of the face so it makes sense to isolate your colors and focus on that first. Give it a try! Take your time... small fine tip, thin brushes, mid liner size works best for me here.

Layout day! YES, I'm using a projector. I can draw everything by hand. I've proven I can again and again. For the sake of a couple days... bring out the projector!!! The first documented case if an artist using a projector was when the ceiling of the 16th Chappell was painted by Micheal Angello. So if it's good enough for that guy I'm not going to feel bad. But regardless you can see by the sketches all the details, color, depth, and fine detail are all up to me. Projectors in this case are really only good for real ruff layout and helping to establish your scale and proportion quickly. On to some pre-colors!

Inspiration!! I see it all over the place. It surrounds me like a blanket. I see beauty and am facinated by the detail of color in the smallest things even a yucky garbage dumpsters can fascinate me. I take and print pictures that I and friends take all the time. These are some that are swimming around in my head and will make it to canvas. Copywrite doesn't apply with anything personal that I have or have permission to use from you. But with the 2 magazine covers you see. I'll have to customize them heavily. Name change of the magazine, different text, different color, different girls... they are inspirational only. I love the flavor of the covers and have to make something that's me. The boat picture in the middle is at the top of my list. It's a picture taken by a work associate down in Savanah. It's breath taking and I have to get in on canvas!

Ok, it's time to finish this painting of my grandson Levi. I'm not much into portrait painting. But I love this little guy son much I'll make an exception. The background is all done so I'm down to his little cute face. A couple of detail passes and final overall color should do the trick.
