den of artists who daily create jewelry, pottery, clothing, dolls, sculptures, paintings and other varieties of crafts. We create art from the natural resources available, such as painted gourds, china berry jewelry and woven baskets from pine needles and wood. Until now, these artists have mostly only been able to retail their art at festival events. This monthly market underlines Pembroke’s awareness that the arts are a viable economic driver and part of a thriving downtown. In the report New Engines of Growth: Five Roles for Arts, Culture and Design, it is discussed how cultural resources can “support high-growth industries, accelerate innovation, foster entrepreneurial activity, address unemployment, build human capital and revive distressed areas.”
The report further concludes, “The creative cluster includes not only the traditional visual artists, cultural performances, and nonprofit institutions, but also such large economic sectors as entertainment, fashion, publishing, and broadcasting, which are among the fastest- growing and most export-oriented sectors of the American economy.”
To support innovation and create an economic opportunity for the artists, on Saturday September 10, 2016 from 10 AM -4 PM the UNCP Entrepreneurship Incubator will host the first Artist Market Pembroke (AMP). This market is a collaboration of Innovate NC-Pembroke, The UNCP Entrepreneurship Incubator and The Museum of the Southeast American Indian. Hundreds of artisans create their work in their homes or studios. This Market will allow artisans to sell their custom made pieces directly to the public. Over 30 culturally and media diverse artists will showcase their artistic products. Whether it’s woven baskets, beaded jewelry, painted gourds, glass beads, pottery, prints from paintings and photography, quilts, and carvings, you will find something of interest to you. The Artist Market Pembroke will from time to time feature demonstrations by the artists creating their work.
