46 years ago… What are your memories from when Mount Saint Helens erupted?

Forty-six years ago today, on May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in one of the most powerful volcanic events in U.S. history. The blast forever changed the Pacific Northwest, flattening forests, reshaping the landscape, and reminding the world just how powerful nature can be.

Today, the mountain stands as both a symbol of destruction and incredible rebirth, drawing visitors from around the world to witness the scars and beauty left behind.

Long before modern conveniences, families in our region built homes with hard work, determination, and materials gathered from the land around them.

This photograph features the Fix family farm cabin, originally built in 1879 by Monrod Fix for his wife and their eight children. A second story was added in 1890 as the family grew. The 16 x 20 cabin was constructed using locally sourced wood from the forests near Ukiah — a true example of the resourcefulness and craftsmanship of early Eastern Oregon settlers.

In 2005, the cabin was carefully moved to its current home at Heritage Station Museum, where visitors can also see the barn, replica outhouse, and root cellar display that help tell the story of everyday rural life from generations past.

We are proud to help preserve these pieces of local history for future generations to experience and appreciate.

We’re one week from Election Day! Don’t forget that ballots must be postmarked or dropped at an election drop site by 8pm on Tuesday, May 19.

Voters in Multnomah County will have the opportunity to renew the Oregon Historical Society levy, which provides crucial funding for OHS and four east county historical societies, supporting educational programming, preservation work, and access to Oregon’s history — without raising taxes. Learn more about the impact of this funding in a recent op-ed published in the Oregonian.

Oregon has a fascinating election history, and in this blog post, OHS Boyle Family Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk discusses the first presidential election in which Oregonians cast ballots, the many individuals who have served as secretary of state, and several unusual and notable figures in Oregon election history.

This Mother’s Day, we’re honoring the incredible mothers who helped shape our community generations ago. ❤️

Pictured here is the Earnhardt family in the early 1900s — twelve children gathered alongside their mother, whose strength, sacrifice, and hard work helped hold this large family together during a very different time in American history.

Photos like these remind us that behind every generation is a mother whose love and determination carried a family forward. Heritage Station Museum is proud to preserve these important local stories.

One mother. Twelve children. One remarkable piece of local history. ❤️

This early 1900s photograph of the Earnhardt family captures something truly timeless as we celebrate Mother’s Day — the strength and devotion of mothers. Long before modern conveniences, mothers like this worked tirelessly to care for large families and build the foundations of our community.

We love sharing and preserving these snapshots of everyday life at Heritage Station Museum because every family has a story worth remembering.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, this early 1900s photograph of the Earnhardt family serves as a beautiful reminder of the mothers who came before us. ❤️

Raising twelve children was no small task, especially during a time without the comforts we often take for granted today. Mothers like this one carried enormous responsibility with strength, resilience, and love.

Heritage Station Museum is honored to help preserve these glimpses into our local families and the women who helped shape their stories.

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards! The passion and dedication shown by volunteers at museums and historical organizations across the state is inspiring.

Here at Heritage Station Museum, we may not have had a winner from Pendleton this year, but we certainly have volunteers worth celebrating every single day. Our museum simply could not do what it does without the hardworking people who donate their time, talents, and love for local history.

To our volunteers: thank you for helping preserve the stories, artifacts, and memories that make our community special. You are appreciated more than words can say.

Interested in helping preserve local history? Stop by the Heritage station museum and fill out a volunteer application! We’d be happy to have you ❤️

Speaking of Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to give a special shoutout to local teacher Ken Jacobs and his amazing fourth grade class! 📚🧵

During their visit to Heritage Station Museum, the students made individual quilt blocks as part of their tour experience. Those blocks were later assembled into one stunning full-size quilt — and the finished project is incredible!

A big congratulations to the students for all their hard work and creativity, and thank you to Mr. Jacobs for helping keep hands-on learning and local traditions alive.
