The answer to last week's trivia question is true!

The Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat, a veteran of World War II, was the first Blue Angels aircraft flown in July 1946. What was the first jet you saw the Blues fly in? ✈️

⚒️ Next in our National Historic Preservation Month series: Phase III, Major Structural Restoration.

Led by Robinson Iron in 2016, this was one of those projects where opening the tower revealed more than expected. Crews discovered extensive rust jacking inside the walls, replaced 110 treads and 30 risers, repaired tower cracks, repainted the interior, leveled and refinished the floor, and restored major architectural details, including shutters and the historic south window.

The work also led to important improvements across the site, from new exhibits and re-roofing projects to the acquisition of our fourth-order Fresnel lens.

Preservation is rarely simple. Sometimes, the deeper you go, the more the building tells you what it needs. Thanks to careful restoration work, the Pensacola Lighthouse remains a place where history is not just remembered, but climbed!

On May 10, 1862, Pensacola changed hands.

After hearing that Union ships had passed Confederate-held forts in New Orleans, Confederate troops evacuated Pensacola. Before leaving, they burned and destroyed their camps so nothing useful would be left behind for U.S. troops.

Thankfully, the Pensacola Lighthouse survived the evacuation without damage, but bringing the light back was not so simple.

Confederate authorities had already removed the lens, many lighthouse supplies had been taken for the war effort, and the tower had been damaged during an artillery duel in November 1861. The light had weathered more than a little wartime trouble.

Still, the beacon returned.

On December 20, 1862, the Pensacola Light shone once again with a fourth-order Fresnel lens, guiding vessels from its place above Pensacola Bay. ⚓️

For National Historic Preservation Month, we’re highlighting restoration projects that help keep the Pensacola Lighthouse standing strong for future generations!

First up: Phase I Exterior Tower Restoration. Completed in 2013–2014, this project removed old paint, repaired 300 linear feet of cracks, identified what caused them, and repainted the tower’s brick exterior after repairs.

It was careful work that helped preserve one of Pensacola’s most treasured landmarks!
