New feature: Mariposa Museum’s Object of the Month!

We are excited to announce that a few weeks ago we premiered our first in our ground floor foyer case. Every month we will display a different piece from our collection there for our visitors to enjoy, alongside a couple of interesting facts about it. (And of course we will also share it on our social media for those who are far! 😉)
Our first object on view was this one exquisite hand embroidered silk jacket from China, from our textile collection. And here’s some interesting info connected to it: Silk weaving technology, including sericulture, reeling and weaving, seems to have originated in China at least 5,500 years ago.
Silk became one of China’s greatest export products for most of its history and gave its name to one of the greatest trading networks in history: the Silk Road.

Next week we will share with you our September object. Stay tuned!

Remember to join us today, Sunday August 30th at 3 pm!

Please join us at Mariposa Museum on Sunday August 30th at 3 pm for a fascinating talk with David Blair titled “Courage in Kurdistan: Nonviolence in a War Zone”.

Iraqi Kurdistan has been in the news in recent months, as Iran and Iranian proxies have bombarded American bases in northern Iraq and also civilian targets in the cities of Iraqi Kurdistan.

David Blair traveled to Iraqi Kurdistan in October, 2025 on a delegation led by Community Peacemaker Teams. The delegation witnessed the work of CPT team members to document cross border attacks by Turkey and Iran which have caused death, damage and displacement; and to support journalists and civil society activists who are persecuted by the Kurdish Regional Government.

This program will introduce you to the landscape, people and cultural richness of a part of the world little known to Americans. The mission of Community Peacemaker Teams is “to build partnerships to transform violence and oppression.” You will meet the local peacemakers who risk injury and death in this work, and you will be inspired by their courage.
