Built in 1859 by Joseph Ryerss, the Ryerss Museum showcases a huge array of art, furniture, and other objects from around the world. Located in beautiful Burholme Park, Ryerss is the perfect place to visit over the weekend to learn the history of the Ryerss family and see the amazing things they collected. Saturday was a rainy day, but that didn’t stop volunteers from doing a major clean up of Ryerss’ outside shutters. They scrubbed the dirty shutters and applied a mold preventative. They also cleaned the porch flooring. Thank you to Cheryl, Martha, Cathy and Sheen. It looks amazing.

Last Saturday, May 16, a sunny and cool day, 30 people came out to beautify Burholme Park, for Love Your Park Day. Thank you to all of the volunteers who cleaned up flower beds, gathered sticks, dug and pulled up ivy and weeds, swept the roadway, and bagged 36 large bags of debris for disposal. Special thanks to the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Mu Omega Chapter, for joining us in caring for our neighborhood treasure. Come out and enjoy the Park and stop in the Ryerss Museum and Library, borrow a book, tour the museum, color a picture or play a game, and sign up for an upcoming event in June.

Love Your Park is next Saturday, May 16 from 1-3 pm. Come out and help spruce up our wonderful Burholme Park. Have you ever met Carl? He’s a great friend of Ryerss and Burholme Park. He almost daily walks the park picking up trash and making our park beautiful for visitors. If you see Carl out there getting his exercise while cleaning up the park, say Hi and thank him. Be like Carl and volunteer to help on Love Your Park Day.

Another great event at Ryerss on Sunday, presented by the Tacony Lab and hosted by the Friends of Ryerss. The program “Threads of History 250th” was introduced by Tacony Lab Program Manager, Barb Bauer. “It’s part of the City's Semiquincentennial celebrations, and shines a spotlight on the history of Northeast Philadelphia and the many small organizations that keep that history alive.” Guests were given some history about Ryerss Museum and Library and invited to tour the museum. The program moved to the porch for a free art workshop run by local artists and included make and take-home kites, block prints, and a special Ryerss community flag made on cyanotype fabric. (Read the captions on each photo to learn more about the day’s activities) A special Thank you to Tacony LAB for choosing our site for this Semiquincentennial series and the Friends of Ryerss and staff for hosting.
You can see the Ryerss Community flag on display along with others at the Threads of History Event culminating at Glen Foerd on July 5th.

What a fun and informative presentation today at Ryerss! Rick Spector shared a wonderful multi-media look back at baseball in Philadelphia: the places, the players, the neighborhood, and trivia. It was enjoyed by 28 Phillies fans, who enjoyed reminiscing, challenging their baseball knowledge, and reliving a variety of past experiences, from neighborhood stick ball and half ball joys to a 1964 Phillies team season that still hurts. A time for sharing memories: attendees who were at the very last game at Shibe Park when the fans tore the place apart to get a souvenir, and one attendee who was a Bat Boy at the park when he was young. A great afternoon.
