Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Sharon Mayone

Sharon is an artist with roots in architecture and many years spent shaping commercial spaces. Using those same creative skills, she explores the possibilities of texture, form, and transformations through weaving, drawing, painting, and mixed media experimentation.

Her studio practice is an ongoing exploration of how everyday materials can be reimagined, renewed, and brought into a new story. Each piece is a reminder that beauty can emerge from the overlooked, the discarded, and the ordinary.

Pictured here is “AMERICAN CONSUMERISM” which will be on view at GLG for this iteration of Fiber Reimagined. AMERICAN CONSUMERISM is a low relief sculptural work composed of floating, wooden dowels wrapped with more than 800 barcodes salvaged from single-use plastic bags, wrappers, and packaging. The piece illustrates the extraordinary volume of plastic otherwise destined for the landfill or worse, our waterways and shorelines. The work invites the viewer into a quiet, meditative space, echoing the rhythmic calm of water while holding the weight of what lies beneath its surface.

Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Nancy Herman

Nancy thinks of herself as somewhere between a court jester and a seer.  With an aim to please and a want to reveal the truth as she sees it, Nancy spends a significant portion of her practice playing and making art as an intense form of enjoyment.

In recent years, Herman’s work has been in needle felting, allowing for her to get dimension into her colors. TRAGIC COMEDY MASKS are her version of a traditional mask form, of which was first created in Ancient Greece in the 6th Century BC. At the time, the masks allowed actors to portray different characters, genders, and exaggerated emotions.

Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Andrea Finch Andrea Finch

Inspired by the streams and rivers in Central Pennsylvania that feed into the Chesapeake Bay and the farmlands that surround them, Andrea Finch reuses textiles discarded by designers and decorators, creating with small bits of ephemeral fabrics from sample books & leftover scraps from other work. Once used, she cannot replace them. Textile production is a resource-intensive industry: the more that is kept out of landfills the more at peace Andrea feels with her chosen medium. With her work, she saves memories, preserves the environment, and creates vessels with ties to her family and community.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to and participated in the opening reception of Fiber Reimagined IV and First Friday! Incredible turn out, lovely and insightful conversation, and as always, it is so great to see the Chestnut Hill community come out to support each other.

Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Susanne Williams  Susanne Williams

Susanne Williams is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, ceramics, textiles, and sculptural forms made from reclaimed plastics. Her art is driven by curiosity, environmental themes, and a love of animals — especially cats and birds. Originally from Nebraska, she now lives and works in West Virginia.

Plastic persists. A byproduct of the petroleum industry, plastic is made to be disposable and forgettable, yet it can endure for centuries. Bridal gowns, on the other hand, symbolize vows,
permanence, and cultural traditions. This work draws a parallel between our relationship with plastic (oil) and the institution of marriage, whether it’s based on love, convenience, or something in between. It is a union from which we cannot divorce ourselves. By elevating plastic to a monumental status, Susanne encourages viewers to think about what we discard and what truly lasts.

Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Kid Kardiac the kid.

Kid Kardiac is a Memphis-based textile artist who has been focusing on defining their art voice over the past five years. This journey has since led to a multitude of opportunities, two of the most recent being showcased in the FACES exhibition at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, along with a residency through Crosstown Arts in Memphis. In 2022, she made the pivot from rug-making to a more fine-arts space, intertwining vibrant yarn with other textiles. Her primary focus is on preserving Black American culture by capturing moments from the physical world into art. Starting with her love of telling the stories that have been lost in the passage of time, while also highlighting key moments critical to the legacy of Black American culture, and curating a space for the longevity of those stories. As a native-born Memphian, she strives to bring those rich cultural moments to the community that has always been her home. The hope is that her artwork could spark curiosity refined in these moments to promote educational research.
