Drinking is a necessary human activity, whether for hydration, pleasure, socializing, or rituals. However, how and why we drink is different around the world. Here, you will become more familiar with vessels used for drinking, as well as their multiple functions, materials, and ritualistic meanings. In one room, ritualistic drinking vessels take the stage. Whether in a highly regimented Chinese an

cestral ritual or an English tea service, drinking is done in a calculated manner. In another room, manufactured luxury goods show how cultures work to make their vessels suitably lavish. In a third room, drinking vessels are presented and categorized based on their associated beverages: beans (either coffee or chocolate), leaves (tea), grains (beer/spirits), and grapes (wine, of course!). Overall, the vessels we use to drink are more valuable to us than you may realize. Their importance lies not just in the liquids they hold, but in the meanings we give them.

Beginning on December 8, 2017, the students of MUSL 630-01 and EAM T480-01 are proud to present Holding Your Drink: 3000 Years of Drinking Vessels from the Drexel and Salzberg Collections. Holding Your Drink is an exhibition focusing on the variety of drinkware found in the Drexel and Salzberg collection’s. Find it in the Rincliffe Gallery, in Drexel University’s Main Building on 3141 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104!
