Fairmount Water Works Discover. Connect. Act. For more than 200 years, the Fairmount Water Works has continually found ways of telling the story of our connection with water.

Historic site of pumping station, aquarium, Kelly Pool, & today houses an award-winning Interpretive Center focusing on environmental education and stewardship. The Fairmount Water Works operated as a pumping station from 1815 to 1909, an aquarium from 1911 to 1962, as the Kelly Natatorium (pool) until 1972, and today houses an award-winning urban environmental education center, and Philadelphia Water's public education destination.

As we settle back into work this week, we are certainly missing Chris at the front desk as she starts a new chapter in her career. Chris welcomed every visitor to the center with a smile and brought such a positive energy to our team. We wish her nothing but the best in her next chapter. 💫 💫 💫

CONGRATULATIONS, JAY 👏 👏 👏

If you’ve been following us or have visited us this summer, you might know of Jay Byrd —he is an exceptional talent and passionate environmental educator that we have been lucky to have on our team as an AWE fellow (Alliance for Watershed Ed ) and educator through (LGO123 ). For nearly 2 years, Jay’s work has successfully connected communities to our watershed in various ways, most recently with the feat of constructing and installing a floating basking dock, accompanied by signage of six Turtle species local to the Schuylkill River, designed with his original artwork (swipe to see). To say we’re proud of him is an understatement. As his fellowship comes to an end today, we are sad to say goodbye, but excited for his future in the environmental field—we are just the beginning of his journey.

Next, Jay will be working full time for The Dandelion Project to continue his work educating and empowering our youth. Make sure to follow him JJ as he’s always delivering cool photos and content from his hikes and outdoor adventures.

We’ll miss you Jay! Thanks for all of your hard work! ❤️ 🌈 🐢 ⭐️ 🧚

We are excited and proud to host John Brady ‘s upcoming photography exhibit titled, “Walking the Schuylkill.” Please join us for its opening reception on the 16th of September from 4:30 - 7pm. Register with the link in our story!

The exhibit will be on public display at the Interpretive Center from September 19, 2026 through January 8, 2027. We hope you’ll stop by to appreciate these photos and the story of the Schuylkill River.

Next Saturday, August 22nd, we will be hosting a Turtle Talk at Fairmont Water Works with our guests from Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center !
