Before the stars, there were stripes.

This Revolutionary War flag, now on view in “A Nation of Artists,” is the earliest known American flag with thirteen red and white stripes representing the colonies united in independence. Captured during the Battle of Pound Ridge, New York, in 1779 and taken to Britain by Lieutenant-Colonel Banastre Tarleton, it is one of only four surviving American Revolution flags still privately owned, which can be seen in a nearby gallery.

On Memorial Day, we remember the generations who answered their country’s call.

📍 See it in person in the first floor American Art galleries, part of "A Nation of Artists"

A leisurely gathering unfolds along the seaside, where figures and their dogs move through a shared afternoon stroll. Maurice B. Prendergast's layered brushwork transforms the scene into a woven field of color and rhythm.

On view now in "A Nation of Artists."

Art Term: Vanitas

In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, artists began arranging everyday items into still lifes that carried a deeper message.

These paintings were meant to remind you that nothing lasts forever.

📍 See "Vanitas" in Gallery 364.

The climate crisis didn’t appear overnight.

Artist and public historian Aislinn Pentecost-Farren will lead a tour through “A Nation of Artists,” tracing the roots of climate change through works connected to industrialization, extraction, and Indigenous dispossession.

By re-narrating objects through a climate lens, the project uncovers the histories hidden beneath accepted narratives.

📍The Philadelphia Museum of Art
📅 Saturday, May 30. 2:30 - 3:30 pm
🎟️ Free event, registration required
🌐 Tours for 250: From Our Forefathers: Climate Crisis in American Art is commissioned by and organized in partnership with Art Philly's What Now: 2026 Festival.

A museum is more than what’s on the walls.

It’s the people sketching in the galleries, attending talks, bringing their kids, asking questions, revisiting favorite works, and the staff behind the scenes making those moments possible every day.

Happy International Museum Day.
