Penn Dental School - Student Group Show

Dr. Tom Barber teaches a painting course for Dental Students. The works on display were created by the 30 students in this course. Each student created 2 paintings in Penn’s “Canvas Block.”

Barber describes the course as follows: "This selective course places the emphasis on painting what you see, not what you imagine. The media is acrylic on canvas. Students are taught brush technique, illusion of distance. outline strategy for difficult structures, layering of paint, diaphanous effect and mixing of colors. There are three subjects: White rhino, America’s Cup – Newport Rhode Island, and Lake Erie Chautauqua"

The show runs until August 23..

Calling all Penn Graduate Artists

The Burrison Gallery invites any Penn alumna, alumnus or spouse/partner of these groups to apply for a show of their art in the Gallery. Selected artists will be given a four- to five-week, one-person show at the gallery with the option of an opening reception.

A typical Burrison show consists of not more than twenty five works united by a common theme and medium. The art must be two dimensional (paintings, prints, photography, drawings) and must be framed and wired for hanging. All art must be hung on cables that hang from a wall mounted track. The hanging hardware allows for horizontal and vertical positioning. No art may be wall mounted. The artist will be responsible for the installation of the show, with input from the Gallery.

To apply for a show, please complete the application form found on the web at https://bit.ly/2WFbXx4 and send the completed application together with ten digital images of art that will be included in the show to [email protected]. Send questions or request for further information to: Jerry Porter, Chair, Burrison Gallery Advisory Committee at the above email address.

Spots of Time
Woodcuts by John Taylor
March 8 – April 12, 2019
Reception: March 8: 5:00–7:00 PM

John D. Taylor’s art is influenced by the Abstractionists, Zen Modernists, and the free jazz of John Coltrane that he encountered in the 60’s and 70’s. Taylor’s minimalist compositions reveal a mind both informed and visionary, and hands equally skillful and expressive. His art is motivated by questions:
• How to resolve the conflict between tactile and illusionary space?
• What is the difference between what is seen and what is felt?
• In the woodcut prints, how to treat space as a substance rather than emptiness?

He believes that what is taken away is equally as important as what is left behind.

A longtime member of the Penn Community, he arrived first as a student, study painting in the Graduate School of Fine Art, after leaving that program he set out to make art on his own; however, he did continue with the University, working initially as a gallery preparator for the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) and later as the head of the installation crew of the Arthur Ross Gallery.

The Burrison Gallery is located in the University Club at Penn on the 2nd floor of The Inn at Penn, 3611 Walnut Street, and is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
