đźš‚ Step Into History: The Philippi B&O Station
If you want to experience the true soul of Barbour County, look no further than the stunning Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad Station in Philippi. While the tracks may be quieter now, the building is louder than ever with stories of our past!
From Depot to Museum
Completed in 1911, this station was once the bustling gateway for travelers, students, and soldiers. Today, it has been perfectly preserved as the Barbour County Historical Museum. It’s the best place to explore our local legacy—from the first land battle of the Civil War to the world-famous "Philippi Mummies."
Unique Mission Style Architecture
What makes this building truly iconic is its Mission Style architecture. It stands out in West Virginia with its distinct Spanish-influenced features:
The Curvilinear Gables: Notice those elegant, wavy rooflines inspired by the historic missions of the American West.
The Red Tile Roof: That vibrant roof isn't just a pop of color; it’s a classic Mediterranean hallmark of the Mission aesthetic.
Stucco-Inspired Walls: The smooth, clean exterior gave the B&O line a touch of sophistication that still looks incredible today.
Deep Overhangs: Designed to keep passengers in the shade while waiting for the whistle to blow.
Whether you're a train buff, a history lover, or just appreciate beautiful buildings, the museum is a must-visit landmark right next to our famous Covered Bridge.
