Event name: THOU SHALT/NOT. Artworks by Dain Gore
Description: THOU SHALT/NOT explores the middle path between religious control and secular freedom (and vice versa) through an imaginary space, as I continue to cultivate my own personal mythology that began with THE END IS EVER NIGH. The artwork, in the form of puppet-like wall paintings called INGs, intentionally clashes secular and religious imagery--just one of the "Shalt Nots." Themes explored will be tropes such as demonic and angelic interpretations of sin and virtue, as well as the recurring imagery of the shoulder angel/ devil "conscience" as depicted in cartoons and pop culture as further evocation of symbols of control.
Event name: Violets’. Artworks by Natalie Strait
Description: Through a semi-autobiographic and q***r lens, Natalie Strait’s paintings explore the uncertainty of modern feminine existence, portraying complicated women in multiple states of being-- navigating the interplay between emotional vulnerability and gendered, social-media-enforced performativity. Informed by the current post-pandemic landscape of mental and physical interiority, she depicts moments (and people) lingering in space. The women in her paintings appear anxious, bored, hysteric, in love, regretful, at odds with themselves, at peace, posing, performing. They exist for themselves, while self-aware of the conditions in which they exist in and are viewed through.
