This weekend we honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation—a tradition of remembrance that began after the Civil War, when communities across the country decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and handmade tributes.
Here in rural Illinois, those early observances were often led by small towns, church groups, and farm families who understood sacrifice in a deeply personal way.
At the Illinois Rural Heritage Museum, we preserve the stories of the generations who built and defended this region—farmers who left their fields to serve, families who kept homesteads running in their absence, and communities that gathered each year to remember their own.
