While exploring memories of place, and sensations of discomfort and yearning, Kaylani Brown creates richly textured worlds full of depth, movement, and possibility. The characters in Kaylani’s paintings and drawings look not just to the past, but to the sky and to the stars. Made of layers of pencil, airbrush, and transparent oil paint, they’re ethereal and otherworldly, part human and part atmosphere—glittering, rippling, shimmering.

Check out Kaylani’s work on April 16 in I Remember It Better, the 2026 Distillery Residency Exhibition.

Sara Jean Ruiz’s room-sized installation is occupied by versions of herself as plush dolls, surrounded by her own childhood drawings. Her imagined bedroom speaks to the continual need to create safe space for her younger self, and to the contradictions of childhood—both its wholesomeness and helplessness.

Check out Sara’s work on April 16 in I Remember It Better, the 2026 Distillery Residency Exhibition.

For Dominique Swift, the past is a repository of knowledge that informs her vibrant and textural narrative paintings. Her depictions of childhood games evoke the freedom and openness of imaginative play, while also hinting at the more serious lessons that these games taught, especially for children of color.

Check out Dominique’s work on April 16 in I Remember It Better, the 2026 Distillery Residency Exhibition.

In Isabella Schubert-Jones’ installation, Swan Lake, she transforms trash and other discarded materials into a menagerie of woodland animals. Held together by tape and glue, these whimsical and oddly beautiful creatures point to the limitless new worlds that can be imagined through creative reuse.
